Looks like there needs to be a separate forum category just for these. I am trying to install Zen Cart (osCommerce framewaorks) on the webhost4life servers for a client (I run my OWN web server and have installed Zen Cart several times already, so essentially know what I am doing, generally, and have 6 active carts already). I am having issues with this install, as I can't seem to figure out what I need to change to get it to work here. I can't even seem to get it to accept any of the usernames or passwords I have for the database.

I absolutely HATE this control panel. Why is there no search function? Why can't you easily contact them?

Hosting like this is so the reason why I set up my own web server.

I have built three commercial sites using osCommerce and two using osCMAX (a "loaded" version of osCommerce. I have not tried Zen cart so cannot comment. I have also built sites with Interchange and other software.

I use PayPal on two of the osCommerce sites and one of the Max sites. In each case it took a bit of work, installing a contribution for PayPal and then figuring out why it didn't work <g>. PayPal is a little harder to set up than credit card payment processors, but definitely not impossible. It is also not hard to offer PayPal and another credit card option.

My recommendation is to go with plain osCommerce, read the forums and documentation carefully, and start modifiying the "look and feel" without adding any contributions to the site. Do comment all code changes you make and keep backup copies of the source files!

The loaded versions of osCommerce are nice, but they always have a lot of stuff I don't need and the changes to vanilla osCommerce are seriously difficult to figure out, making it hard to add a new feature without breaking something. That's why I think staying with the basic software and adding just what you need is a way better approach for most people.

Once you get a feel for the structure of the program, you are ready to experiment with adding-in contributions. If you see a contribution that sounds good, search the forums for any comments on it (this will save you some of the headaches I have had, thinking "that looks cool" and then discovering the thing really did not work.

One of my commercial sites has as many as 300 visitors at any given moment, has sales in the six digit range, and osCommerce (running on SiteGround, of course!) handles the load without difficulty.
