phpbb security CHMOD
Reply Quote

Hi,  I've recently put up a bulletin board by following the instructions from a web magazine. Unfortunately it used the CHMOD unix command to set the permissions on then config.php file. It sets it from 777 to 666,  i.e. from "Execute, Write, Read" permissions to "Write, Read" only.

I have therefore been trying to set the permissions through webhost4life's Control Panel. The problem is I can't figure out which user to choose from the "Current Permission Settings" e.g. NETWORK, INTERACTIVE, IUSR_DEDI396, etc.

At one point I blocked them all - setting them to read only - except 'Administrator' but when I checked the config.php file through my ftp program (CuteFTP 7 Pro), it still stated that the permissions were set at 777 ("Execute, Write, Read").

I'd appreciate any help as the sooner I can set the security properly the better. Many Thanks.

I am also trying to install the phpBB forum onto my website and am having the same problem.
The permissions aren't being changed properly. There's mention of webhost4life not supporting the linux/unix commands chmod because its a windows server but phpBB supports being installed on windows servers. webhost4life says you have to do it through the control panel. I've done this but the permissions are still not changed. I've checked them through smartFTP. Has anyone been able to get PhpBB to install, and how did you do it if so?

That's correct. It appears to me that permissions aren't being changed properly. What I mean is I posted a ticket in the helpdesk with my above question and they replied with:

You should give the "network service" read write permission. Also, make sure you don't deny any user permission on the other users. If you don't want the user to access your files, simply remove the user.

Well I changed "network services" to read write permissions but it's the same story.

I'm using phpbb with no problems. Using the File Permission in the control panel, add the permissions you need to the IUSR_accountname account.

I'm having a similar problem while trying to install Mambo and phpbb.  My question to you is how did you find the config.php file with your ftp program?  I can't seem to navigate to any folders above my own to find the php files using WS_FTP.

The config.php file would be in the root of your Mambo install, it woudn't be outside your normally accessible folders.

Thanks I realized where it was shortly after posting.  I solved my problem as far as permissions on files by setting the local machine permission to 777 (read, write, execute) during the install on the configuration.php file.  This works (obviously to me now) because the install is running on the host machine and therefore needs permission to change the files.

With all that messing around though I changed some of the root folder permissions and want to reset them but I'm afraid I may be mistaken as to what they were.  Can anyone tell me what the default permissions are for the root folder?
