Search Google for "Search Engine Optimization" (or Search Engine Marketing) and enter the highly competitive world of SEO.  :)

You have to submit your websites to search engine providers. That's all and you don't have to pay a penny.

Google:
http://www.google.com/addurl/

Yahoo:
http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html

Live Search:
http://search.live.com/docs/submit.aspx?FORM=SUNO

Gigablast:
http://gigablast.com/index.php?subPage=addUrl&page=about&

Exalead:

Alexa:

Ask.com is another important search engine, but there's no 'submit website' option available. In order to get indexed by Ask.com, you have to place a link to your websites on websites that are already indexed by Ask.com (forums, wikis etc.).

However, never use any submission services (paid or for free). It's all scam. Just submit your websites to the search engines listed above and your websites get indexed.

Last, but not least... you should clean up your code and validate your websites at http://validator.w3.org/ before submitting!

If you have any further questions, post them here.

That's really just a start.  You can submit your site to as many search engines as you want, but unless you understand how they rank you, it won't help.

The place to start is Google Webmaster Central.  The site will help you (to a point) optimize your site, get it indexed, bring traffic to it, and also add advertising if you want.  You can also submit a business listing to Google Maps!

Some basics to remember:  the similarity / relevance of your domain name, page title, keyword and description metatags, and actual text content of your pages play a huge role in how well your site is ranked.  These are used to generate your SEO score, among other things.  Always use ALT tags on images.  Update content frequently.  Link to other well-ranked sites from yours, where relevant, and try to get as many people as possible (especially on "good" or well-known sites) to link to you.  After that, consider buying keywords if you really want traffic.

Don't forget the obvious things like online directories, online yellow pages, or business listings.  You can get on them all for free with a little effort.

THEN you'll be in business.  Post back if you have any more questions!
