what i did for my ngallery was to add the pictures in the folder called "upload", i just added the folders full of pictures there. and was able to use the "bulk add pictures" thingie to work. Also, be sure to have the right permissions :) Those are always tricky, so i just go on livechat and ask for those to be set for me.....also 'cause i'm a little lazy.
